WASHINGTON — D.C. Police are investigating a triple shooting in Southeast.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, officers received calls around 8:20 p.m. for reports of a shooting in the 500 block of Newcomb Street, Southeast, near an E-Z gas station. When they arrived, they located two men and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds.
Officials say all victims are conscious and breathing and are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
At this time, details surrounding the events that led up to the shooting have not been released.
Police have not issued a lookout for a suspect at this time.
It is also important to note that this is the third shooting involving multiple victims in D.C. in the last 48 hours.
On Sunday, four people were shot in the 100 block of Elmira Street, Southwest. Police say it was later discovered that one of the victims injured in the shooting was one of the accused shooters involved. He has since been arrested. Police are still searching for additional suspects.
On Monday, two women were shot in the 1500 block of N. Capitol Street, Northeast. Police say the shooting escalated from an argument and the women were stuck in the crossfire. Officers later arrested both women for being in a stolen vehicle during the time of the shooting. Police are still searching for suspects who pulled the trigger.
DC Police Chief Pamala Smith says violent crime is down this year across the city, but she is pushing to add more officers to the force.
Smith hopes to add 51 more officers by September of next year using funds from the mayor's proposed budget. The chief wants $565 million, which would be a 14% boost over the current fiscal year.
The chief says right now she has 3,319 sworn officers, which is the lowest Metropolitan Police Department has had over the past five decades. So far this year, the department has seen a 47% increase in the number of applications to the department from this same time last year.
