Police believe shooting inside Reston Gold's Gym was targeted but don't know if the accused gunman knew the victim

Hyung Joon Choi was doing pull-ups when police say 43-year-old Steve Taehee Ha walked up and shot him to death.

RESTON, Va. — Police say a man was targeted when 43-year-old Steve Taehee Ha walked up to him inside a Gold's Gym in Reston and shot him to death Tuesday

According to the Fairfax County Police Department, Ha shot 31-year-old Hyung Joon Choi inside the gym. Ha was arrested several hours later and charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The shooting happened around 1 p.m. when the Gold's Gym was full of people.

One witness told WUSA9 that Choi was doing pull-ups on a machine when the accused gunman walked up and began shooting. Choi was shot several times in the upper body, and he later died at an area hospital.

"Our suspect approached the victim in a targeted stance and shot him," said Fairfax County Police Captain Kent Bailey.

While police say Choi was targeted by Ha, they are still working to figure out if the two men may have known each other.

Ha ran after the shooting but was arrested hours later. Ha appeared in court on second-degree murder charges the next day. He is currently being held without bond.

As far as why Ha shot Choi, police are still investigating any possible motive. Ha will be back in court on August 28.

Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the shooting and are asking anyone with information regarding this incident to call our Major Crimes Bureau at 703-246-7800, option 2.
