SPRINGFIELD, Va. — A man was struck and killed by a car Saturday morning, Fairfax County Police said.

29-year-old David Velasquez was walking near the right lane of westbound Industrial Road in Springfield around 1 a.m. when he was struck by an SUV, police said. Officers said the SUV did not stop after hitting Velasquez and was last seen traveling north on Backlick Road.

Velasquez, who lived in Arlington, was immediately taken to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Authorities have not yet stated whether speed or alcohol was a factor for the driver, but have said that alcohol is believed to be a factor for Velasquez.

This is the 3rd pedestrian fatality in the county to date in 2020.

Fairfax County Police have not yet released further information on the color or model of the vehicle and need your help in identifying the driver. Anyone with any information about the crash is asked to contact the Fairfax County Reconstruction Unit at703-280-0543.

Vehicle and pedestrian accidents around the DMV have been frequent this year, with seven pedestrians and a cyclist hit in 2 nights in Montgomery County.

In November, the District's Department of Transportation adjusted the timing of hundreds of pedestrian signals across D.C. in order to "prioritize pedestrian safety."

"We want people to feel safe and we want to ensure that people are safer when they cross the street," DDOT Director Jeff Marootian said.
