WASHINGTON — Detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash involving a single vehicle and a pedestrian that happened on New Year's Day.
Police said at approximately 4:17 a.m., a silver-colored SUV was traveling southwest on Minnesota Avenue, Southeast. The vehicle, according to police, failed to negotiate a turn and left the roadway.
The vehicle struck a pedestrian who was on a sidewalk inside of a park area. The occupants inside the vehicle fled the scene and the striking vehicle remained on the scene.
D.C. Fire & EMS officials responded to the scene and transported the pedestrian to a nearby hospital, where they later died.
The victim has been identified as 32-year-old Loleita Patricia Gross, of Southeast D.C.
The accident remains under investigation.

In Loudoun County, a suspect in a hit-and-run incident involving a deputy is being sought after he fled the scene on Wednesday, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office (LCSO).
Officials said the hit-and-run incident happened around 11 a.m. in the area of S. Cottage Road and that its suspect is a black man who was driving a dark grey sedan -- possibly a Honda or Toyota with damage to the bumper and passenger side of the car -- and had Ohio license plates.
The deputy hit only received minor injuries and was performing a traffic stop on the car involved when they were hit, LCSO said. The deputy was reportedly running RADAR when they were hit.
Loudoun County officials added that the officer thought the car was coming to a stop when it reportedly sped up and hit them. The deputy was taken to the hospital for their injuries.
Details of who the suspect is are not known and nothing has been released by law enforcement.
