WASHINGTON — A driver is dead and another is facing charges after a person who witnessed a car crash was hit by another car while trying to help.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the events unfolded early Sunday morning in the 5200 block of East Capitol Street, Southeast.
Investigators say a 2018 Chevrolet Malibu struck several cars before flipping and landing on its roof just after 3:30 a.m. A man and woman walking in the area witnessed the crash and went to help the two women inside the car.
Police say that is when a 2013 Lexus GS350 drove by, hitting both the man trying to help the two women and the Malibu that had just crashed. The Lexus driver, abandoned the car and reportedly ran away.
The two women in the crashed Malibu, and the man trying to help them, were taken to an area hospital for help. The woman driving the Malibu later died from her injuries. She has since been identified as 34-year-old Taneisha Parker.
There is no word on the pedestrian or other woman's condition at this time.
Less than an hour after the first crash, police saw a person matching the description of the Lexus driver in a DC Fire and EMS firehouse in Northeast. Police say he was suffering from injuries consistent with a traffic crash.
The driver, later identified as 39-year-old Terrance Gordan, has been charged with unlawful entry and leaving after colliding. Police say more charges will be pending further investigation.
