Man, child found dead in apparent murder-suicide in Prince George's Co. identified

Police believe Kenneth Petty shot and killed his 2-year-old son before taking his own life.

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — A man and child found dead in a car in Prince George's County on Sunday who died in an apparent murder-suicide have been identified.

At 1 p.m. on Sunday, officers responded to the 1200 block of Mercantile Lane in Upper Marlboro near Largo for a welfare check.

Police say they initially responded to the Kaiser Permanente parking structure after a family member reported they had been looking for the pair and knew that was the last place they were seen. 

At the scene, officers found a man and child who had been shot inside a black sedan with Maryland license plates. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The two were identified Monday as Sterling Glover Petty, 2, of Frederick, and Kenneth Petty, 38, of Suitland.

Police believe Kenneth Petty shot and killed his 2-year-old son before taking his own life. His motive is under investigation.

Prince George's County Police told WUSA9 that they usually wait to release details in these types of domestic-related cases, but wanted the public to know there is no threat to the community. 

In a statement Sunday evening, a spokesperson for Kaiser Permanente said: 

"We are working closely with Prince George’s County Police as they investigate a situation that occurred on our Largo Medical Center campus on Sunday, December 10. The Largo Medical Center remains open for care and will have normal operations tomorrow, Monday, December 11. Due to the ongoing police investigation, we are unable to share any additional information at this time."

No other information was readily available on Sunday.

The investigation into this deadly, domestic-related shooting is active and ongoing.
