Bank jugging victim loses $10K in McLean

Detectives investigating the case have identified two suspects, Pedro Bernal Montoya of New Jersey and Antonio Ramos Acevedo of New York.

MCLEAN, Va. — McLean Police are investigating a case that targeted a victim after he left a bank in Springfield.

On March 21, the victim, whose identity has not been released, withdrew $10,000 from a bank located in the 6300 block of Backlick Road in Springfield, before heading to a nearby shopping center.

When the victim came back to his car, he noticed it had been broken into and his money was missing. Nearby surveillance cameras captured multiple people and a reported getaway car during the time of the theft.

During the detectives' initial investigation, they reportedly discovered that the victim had been followed from the bank to the shopping center. Detectives investigating the case have identified two suspects, Pedro Bernal Montoya of New Jersey and Antonio Ramos Acevedo of New York. A third person, described as a a woman who may go by “Mariana” is also believed to have been involved.

Police call this type of crime ‘bank jugging’, which is when a person or people observe a bank and its customers to see who is withdrawing large amounts of money. Once the target is identified, the criminals break into their car to steal the money.

To protect oneself from becoming a victim of a bank jugging, the FCPD encourages community members to take precautions such as:

1. Be aware of your surroundings: Pay attention to anyone who may be observing your activities outside a bank or financial institution.

2. Conceal cash and bank-related items: Store cash in a discreet manner, such as in a purse or wallet, and avoid displaying bank bags or envelopes that may draw attention. Do not leave cash unattended in your vehicle. If you do, consider locking it in the glove box.

3. Vary your routine: Criminals often look for patterns, so it is advisable to change your habits regarding banking and cash withdrawals.

4. Secure your vehicle: Ensure that your vehicle is locked, windows are closed, and valuables are not visible, reducing the likelihood of becoming a target.

5. Report suspicious activity: If you notice someone acting suspiciously or believe you are being followed, report it to the police as soon as possible.

Detectives are asking anyone who may have information about this incident to call the McLean Police Station at 703-556-7750 and ask to speak with a detective.
