FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — Detectives in Fairfax County are asking for the public's help identifying a man they say was involved in a "bank jugging" scheme, stealing $9,500 from someone who had just withdrawn the money from a bank last month.
On Sept. 15, a man withdrew $9,500 from a bank. When the man entered his vehicle and began to drive off, his tire pressure sensor illuminated, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.
The victim exited his vehicle and noticed one of his tires was punctured. Police said the victim was approached by a man in his mid to late 30s, wearing a black T-shirt and carrying a backpack.
The man claimed to have a fix-a-flat kit in his backpack. As the victim was tending to the tire, the suspect told him that he needed another kit and left.
The victim checked his vehicle and realized the money was gone. It had been in the center console, according to police.
Officers determined the suspect was watching the victim as he arrived and left the bank. Police say the suspect punctured the victim’s tire and followed the him as he drove away.
