SCAM ALERT: Beware of woodchucks after recent tornadoes in DMV

No, we aren't talking about the furry animals also known as groundhogs.

MARYLAND, USA — As cleanup efforts remain underway after tornadoes hit the DMV, there is a new scam on the rise residents need to be on the lookout for.

Have you heard of woodchucks? No, we aren't talking about the furry animals also known as groundhogs.

The Montgomery County Office of Consumer Protection is warning anyone looking to make repairs of storm chaser scammers often called "woodchucks."

Woodchuck is a term used to describe people who charm, lie and use scare tactics to convince homeowners they need work done that they don't actually need. They often prey on people during times of natural disasters.

They are unlicensed and often stick you with a big bill without doing any of the work.

Here's how to protect yourself before having work done:

  • Get three estimates
  • Check online reviews
  • Resist high-pressure sales, think about it before committing
  • Get a written contract and read it
  • Never pay the full amount up front
  • Don't sign insurance checks over to contractors

You can check if a contractor is licensed with the Maryland Home Improvement Commission by calling 410-230-6309.
