DC Police warn of new scam

As a reminder, MPD will never demand payment over the phone.

WASHINGTON — Listen up —here's a warning to pay attention to. Someone is calling people pretending to be from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) asking for money to avoid being arrested.

The caller claims to be with MPD and states that a warrant has been issued for the person they're talking to for the failure to appear in court. The scammer then has told victims to go to the police headquarters and to not tell anyone else about the call.

As a reminder, MPD will never demand payment over the phone, as well as bank information or social security numbers.

If you ever receive unsolicited phone calls similar in nature:

  • Don’t feel pressured to act. Scammers may have some public information about you, like your name and address, but that doesn't mean they are legitimate. Verify by contacting the appropriate agency directly using customer service info on their public websites.
  • MPD will never demand payment by phone. Do not share your credit card number, personal information, or other financial information. Do not wire transfer money or transfer funds to anyone you don't know.
  • Share what you know with others. You can protect your family and friends and family by letting know what you have learned and experienced.

Click here to inquire if you have an active DC Court arrest warrant or contact the DC Courts directly at (202) 879-1010. For questions about your jury summons, contact the DC Court Juror Office at (202) 879-4604 or by email at jurorhelp@dcsc.gov

If you have been a victim of this scam in the District, contact the Financial and Cyber Crimes Unit at (202) 727-4159 or mpd.fraud-unit@dc.gov
