Free or cheap ways to get home safe in DC on New Years Eve

The program allows 2,000 riders to get a free Lyft ride up to $15.

WASHINGTON — If you thinking of going out for New Year's Eve, it is best to have a plan on how to get home safely.

According to the latest data available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than a third of U.S. traffic deaths involve drunk drivers. Forty percent of those are on New Year's Day.

Since 1991, the Washington Regional Alcohol Program, a nonprofit often referred to as WRAP, has provided 88,126 safe rides home. The nonprofit says the rides are a way to keep local roads safe from impaired drivers during "traditionally high-risk" holidays.

WRAP began offering its 2023 Holiday SoberRides nightly on December 15. These rides operate from 10 p.m. until 4 a.m. every day through New Year's. Each night, residents 21 and older may download the Lyft app and enter the SoberRide code in the app's payment tab.

The code for the New Year's holiday will be posted on the SoberRide website at 9 p.m. on December 31. Only 2,000 passengers will be able to use the code for up to $15 off one ride taken home in the DC coverage area.

According to WRAP, on New Year's 2022 more than 900 people in the Washington Metropolitan area used the free ride service rather than driving home impaired.

More information about WRAP’s SoberRide® initiative can be found at www.SoberRide.com.

Additionally, Metro announced earlier this week that Metrorail will stay open until 2 a.m., giving people an extra two hours to get home safely. In addition, Metro is reminding customers that they can also take advantage of Metro's 24-hour bus service in D.C. to get home
