These routes were chosen to support late-night and early-morning essential workers in the hospitality, healthcare, and entertainment industries.
"We are honored to serve the dedicated essential workers who keep the heart of our community beating," said Metro General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Randy Clarke. "Their tireless efforts are the backbone of our region, and we want to ensure they have safe, secure, equitable, dependable, and affordable transit options. The launch of our 24/7 DC Bus Service operations is a testament to our commitment to the vibrancy of our community and the essential workers we proudly serve."
Many of the selected bus routes run through the city’s late-night hot spots and entertainment venues to give patrons and employees a more affordable option compared to rideshare competitors. Bus rides will cost a flat rate of $2 for each ride.
With the constant increase in crime throughout the District, many may worry about having to stand at the bus stop or having to walk from the bus stop so late at night. WMATA is also launching ‘Courtesy Stops’ during overnight hours. Riders traveling between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. may request a ‘Courtesy Stop’ between designated bus stops, allowing them to get off closer to their destination. At the bus driver’s discretion, they will identify a safe drop-off location.
