Prince George's County fraternity holds 'family picnic' to help local students

The Prince George's County chapter of Phi Beta Sigma awarded $1,000 scholarships to five high school seniors over the weekend.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — We are getting uplifted by a powerful group of African-American men helping local students.

The men of the Prince George's County alumni chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. — the Zeta Chi Sigma chapter to be exact — held their annual family picnic over the weekend.

It's an exciting time for many young people in the DMV as they embark on the next chapter of their lives by going to college. But parents and students can tell you that college can come with a hefty price tag.

Besides the cookout and family atmosphere with fellowship, music and food, the men of the Prince George's County alumni chapter are holding steadfast to the fraternity's motto of "culture for service and service for humanity." They awarded five high school seniors $1,000 scholarships for college.

But that's just what the Sigmas of Prince George's County do! Over the last 10 years, the Zeta Chia Sigma chapter has awarded $85,000 to seniors in Prince George's County.

Phi Beta Sigma was founded at Howard University in 1914, and has more than 200,000 members worldwide.
