SILVER SPRING, Md. — We are getting uplifted by a local organization that's making sure all kids get to celebrate their special day with an extraordinary birthday party.
WUSA9’s Allison Seymour had the distinct pleasure of co-emceeing the "Hope For Kids Fall Festival and Costume Party" this year, a day of community togetherness and fun for all to benefit the nonprofit, Extra-Ordinary Birthdays.
The organization pays for and hosts parties for kids currently living in shelters, and the festival helps to raise funds for this mission. It featured kids of all ages dressed up in their festive costumes playing games, eating great food, shopping with vendors, and taking part in a costume competition and more.
The event raised about $5,000, which will help Extra-Ordinary Birthdays host personalized birthday parties for 14 or 15 children.
In fact, so far this year alone, they have organized 104 parties, given away 312 brand new books and gifted 520 gifts from kid's wish lists.
Founded in 2010, Extra-Ordinary Birthdays gives children experiencing homelessness a personalized birthday party away from the shelter. To date, they have hosted 1,500 birthday parties.
Organizers say the party's impact reinforces the kids’ sense of importance and self worth, and connects them with a place of happiness.
