WASHINGTON — As we get ready to celebrate mothers this weekend, we are getting uplifted by the power of perseverance of moms who endure chronic illnesses.
Ashley Ivey is a mom, author and multiple sclerosis advocate on a mission to inspire women with chronic conditions. She was diagnosed at 18, and was told she would be confined to a wheelchair, and would never have kids. She defied the odds in every way and had two healthy children.
Ivey shares her journey in a book she co-authored with her mother called "Why I Care & Why I Care Too!" For Mother's Day, she's sharing a poem dedicated to mothers and aspiring moms who face similar challenges.
In the poem, called "Tears," Ivey shares her experience fighting back after an MS relapse impaired her ability to walk and see out of one of her eyes. She also lost the use of her hand. The poem is about her perseverance during that difficult time.
"Slowly my tears turned into a smile," she says.
To all the moms who may be struggling, we see you and we are inspired by your strength and your courage.
