Organization holds Mother's Day luncheon for women experiencing homelessness, other hardships

More than 150 women got the VIP treatment.

GREATER LANDOVER, Md. — An early Mother's Day celebration is helping us feel uplifted. Mother's Day is Sunday, but it came a little early at a ballroom in Landover, Maryland on Wednesday.

That's where the nonprofit organization Anew Inspired Change held its annual luncheon for women experiencing homelessness and other hardships. More than 150 women in all got the VIP treatment for the day. They were pampered with catered meals, new clothes, massages, along with fresh nails and hair.

Hairstylist Charlette says she volunteers for the event every year. It's a cause close to her heart.

"I was once them. I was abused. I was down. Now that I'm no longer there in that state of mind anymore, I want to encourage others that you can come out of it," she said. "It's healing to me and it brings my heart joy to give back to women."

Organizers say the event is now in its 8th year, and they are planning a Father's Day luncheon as well.
