Eight Black-owned food businesses awarded $10,000 grants

The Greater Washington Urban League awarded them at the 2024 By Our Hands Awards Ceremony.

WASHINGTON — We are getting uplifted and inspired by diversity and inclusion in the marketplace. Today, eight local Black-owned businesses are able to continue to thrive in D.C., thanks to the Greater Washington Urban League.

The grants were awarded during the 2024 By Our Hands Awards Ceremony, sponsored in part by the PepsiCo Foundation, which celebrates and empowers local Black-owned food businesses in the district by awarding $10,000 grants to help their establishments thrive.

According to the recent State of Black Business report, only 32% of Black entrepreneurs are fully approved for loans compared to 56% for other businesses. This event looks to level that playing field.

Out of 15 finalists, the eight businesses that won the Black Accelerator Program grants are Fritters and Roast, Harvest 2 Health, Hard Knocks Eatery, Jimmi Juice, Lala Lover Catering, The Mason Jar, Power Foods, and Sage and Lemon.  Each business completed the “by our hands” program which helps food and beverage entrepreneurs launch, scale and sustain long-term growth.
