Organizations around the DMV hand out turkeys for those in need ahead of Thanksgiving

The generosity of our community has us feeling uplifted

WASHINGTON — The spirit of giving in our community has us feeling uplifted. Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and so many local organizations are working to make sure everyone in our area has a turkey dinner to enjoy.

Dar-Al-Hiz-Rah Islamic Center in Falls Church was the site of one turkey giveaway. Nonprofit group Islamic Relief USA distributed hundreds of turkeys and other foods to neighbors who could use a little lift. Islamic Relief USA plans to give away 26,000 turkeys nationwide.

DC Police are also getting in on the fun. They, along with several other organizations, are hosting another turkey distribution event in Southeast D.C. It will be at Gospel Ark Temple Church on Benning Road from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration for that event has closed, but some walk-up slots are still available.

Those in Prince George's County can pick up a free Thanksgiving food box this weekend. The event is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday in the parking lot of Frederick Douglass High School in Upper Marlboro. The event is first come, first served.

There's more to be thankful for! Thanks to our viewers, WUSA9 and the USO was able to hand out gift cards for turkeys, hams and all the fixings to local military families this holiday season. Our annual Turkeys for Troops telethon raised more than $249,000 in donations.

We are all thankful for your generosity!
