This Parks and Rec program inspires a new generation of journalists in DC

The Deanwood Radio Broadcast Youth Journalism program continues to inspire.

WASHINGTON — A District program that continues to inspire us and make a positive impact in the lives of young people is helping us get uplifted.

The Deanwood Radio Broadcast Youth Journalism program is run by the Department of Parks and Recreation in D.C., and led by director and instructor Salih Williams. Since 2007, it has delivered on its goal of engaging and educating young people in D.C. about broadcast journalism and how it can help to foster a positive outcome in their communities.

WUSA9's Allison Seymour recently joined the list of folks in the business invited to come out to the Deanwood Rec Center and spend some time with the scholars. Allison has spoken with the young journalists for the past couple of years.

There have been 70 students since its inception. Forty-nine of those have gone on to study mass media at various colleges. Seven have graduated from collage. Three more are headed to graduation this school year.

The award-winning program is one of only three programs in the country that's an official partner with Congress.

The students all get a youth Congressional Medal of Freedom and a letter of recommendation for college written by a member of Congress.

We want to share things that uplift you! If you have something you'd like to share, email us at GetUplifted@wusa9.com or contact Allison Seymour on X, Facebook and Instagram.
