WASHINGTON — On Wednesday there was a very special congressional recognition for some of the District's brightest young people, and that is getting us uplifted.
It was a big day on Capitol Hill as 11 students from the Deanwood Radio Broadcast Youth Journalism Program were awarded the Youth Congressional Medals of Freedom. Six senators and two congressmen were in attendance for the honors.
Three of the students received special recognition for their perseverance and commitment to journalism.
Under the direction of Salih Williams, the program offers D.C. students hands-on broadcast training and is run by D.C.'s Parks and Recreation Department out of the Deanwood Recreation Center in Northeast. Every summer, students learn the tools of the trade to tell unique stories and professionals in the field of journalism have been asked to come in and speak with the students.
WUSA9's Allison Seymour even made a visit in 2022. "It has been an honor to see these students grow into the amazing young adults they are today," Seymour said. "And I am so uplifted by the fact that they have been recognized by Congress for their greatness!"
