OXON HILL, Md. — We are getting uplifted by hundreds of people in the DMV for a work development conference.
It might not sound like an unusual deal, but this group is set on making a big impact in the community that is hosting them, Oxon Hill, Maryland.
Here's how. On their way to the conference, meant to sharpen their skills, they stopped to share some love by helping to fill the plates for our neighbors who need a little help. They participated in a meal packing project with a twist — the conference attendees chose the meal they wanted to create, then created the meals by grabbing the ingredients to create the kits to feed a family of four.
"If I could do it a thousand more times, I absolutely would, because I feel like the disparity before hunger for our community, every community, is just unfortunate to hear that there are some times that kids don’t get to eat until they’re at school,” said Terri Williams, a conference participant from D.C. “So we can give that opportunity to kids, people and families, that's a great, wonderful thing."
A group called "Move For Hunger" is behind the effort. They say the people who attended the conference packed 800 meal kits for the Maryland Food Bank.
To put that another way, their work will feed 3,200 of our neighbors. That is an impact that will go well beyond what the numbers measure.
