DC 6th graders host mock election to learn about voting, democracy | Get Uplifted

The students at DC's Field School may not be voting age, but they know all about the electoral process.

WASHINGTON — With just 15 days until Election Day, we are getting uplifted by young people in our area getting involved in the electoral process.

The 6th grade students at the Field School in Washington, D.C. participated in what they call a "teach-in" and mock election for the whole school.

To get ready for the Nov. 5 election, students at the school took part in a two-day election teach-in, where they applied very specific themes related to the election into their classroom lessons. Instruction ranged from learning about and writing inaugural poetry to figuring out polling stats to even learning how voting works in other countries.

The overall goal was to make sure students learned how to think about these important issues and not what to think.

Students then held a mock election where faculty chose issues of importance to students and created ballots. They also ran the polls, counted the ballots and reported the results.

It will be many years until these 6th graders can take what they have learned to the actual polls, but we are uplifted by the fact they will be educated voters when it's their turn to cast their ballots.

We want to share things that uplift you! If you have something you'd like to share, email us at GetUplifted@wusa9.com or contact Allison Seymour on X, Facebook and Instagram.
