WASHINGTON — The Humane Rescue Alliance is investigating suspected animal cruelty after an anonymous tip led to 11 dogs being found neglected and stuck in a single cage of a Southeast home on Thursday.
A search and seizure warrant obtained by HRA Humane Law Enforcement led officers to a makeshift shelter in the backyard, where officers smelled a strong scent of animal waste emanating from under a blue tarp.
After pulling back the tarp, they found 11 dogs crammed into a single cage with no access to any food or water, many of which also appeared to have severe medical conditions that were left untreated.
The dogs range in age from puppies to adults, and vary in breed from French and English bulldogs to pitbull mixes.
Chris Schindler, Vice President of Field Services at the Humane Rescue Alliance, said the horrific conditions were something no animal should live through.
"No animal should be forced to live in conditions like we saw today," Schindler said. "These dogs clearly lived a life of neglect for too long, but today is a new day for them."
The Humane Rescue Alliance, which was established in 2016, provides care, veterinarian outreach and foster programs for animals across the District.
The dogs are currently being cared for by the Alliance at an "undisclosed location" and are being examined by a team of vets, where they will be provided necessary medical treatments and care.
"We will provide the animals with desperately-needed medical care, the socialization and affection they deserve, and a clean environment to live in," Schindler said.
