WASHINGTON — Marcel's, a D.C. fine-dining mainstay for a quarter of a century, is closing its doors. Chef Robert Wiedmaier announced the restaurant would not be renewing its lease, closing for good on May 12.
"We owe a debt of gratitude to our dedicated staff, past and present, whose talent and hard work have contributed to Marcel's success over the years. Their unwavering commitment has been the driving force behind Marcel's dedication to its cuisine and service," Wiedmaier said in a statement on Marcel's website. "To our guests, we extend our heartfelt thanks for your loyal patronage and support. Your continued presence has enriched Marcel's journey and made every dining experience truly special."
Wiedmaier, who grew up in Brussels, rose to prominence in D.C. and currently owns 10 restaurants in the DMV, under the RW Restaurant Group brand. He earned a Michelin Star in 2019 for his restaurant Siren by RW, which closed shortly after getting the award.
He told Michelin Guide that when he first got the call from inspectors about Siren, he thought it was for Marcel's.
Marcel's first opened in 1999 and became his flagship, specializing in contemporary European cuisine. Over the years, it has consistently ranked among the city's best, earning RAMMY Awards from the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington, and Wine Spectator.
Wiedmaier told the Washington Post that staff displaced by Marcel's closure will have jobs at his other restaurants. Mussel Bar & Grill is set to open in Bethesda next month.
"While Marcel's may be closing its doors, the spirit of culinary innovation and hospitality will live on," the chef said. "Thank you for being a part of Marcel's story and for your unwavering support."
