WASHINGTON — If you haven't eaten at this Indian restaurant yet, you might want to book a table because according to a newly released list, it is one of the best places for food in the country.
Food & Wine magazine released its 'Top 20 Restaurants in the US' list on Tuesday as part of their 2024 Global Tastemakers. This is the second annual awards to celebrate these restaurants that provide more than just good eats.
The magazine says the awards recognize restaurants that not just have good flavors, but "also the ambience, hospitality, and overall package that make a place stand out among the rest."
The 20 picks across the nation were decided through the magazine's panel of food and travel journalists. The list also includes a 'Plus One' pick that they say cannot be missed -- that restaurant also comes from the nation's capital.
Daru, which opened in August 2021 and is located on Maryland Avenue Northeast, made the list at No. 8. Here's what the magazine said about the restaurant:
"Chef Suresh Sundas’s inventive Indian restaurant has been one of the District’s most talked about dining destinations. Here, Sundas takes familiar dishes from his homeland and adds unpredictable details that forces diners to see them anew, like adding burrata to daal. You can easily tuck into a massive meal here or just pick-and-choose a few things from the snacks menu, all of which pair easily with the equally inventive cocktails coming from the bar."
In the plus one section is Yellow, where Palestinian-American chef Michael Rafidi combines Middle Eastern flavors with French pastry techniques. It was also recently featured in the new season of the Netflix show Somebody Feed Phil.
"The restaurant opened in 2020 next to its sister restaurant Albi, before expanding to Georgetown two years later, with plans for another location in Union Market later this year," Food & Wine said in their excerpt about the establishment. "The menu is casual and comforting, with many offerings from Rafidi's childhood, including mezze, hummus, and pita sandwiches that are wood-fired to order."
