WASHINGTON — Get ready for a little taste of winter Friday! Not only will it be the coldest day we've experienced so far this season, it will also be blustery with some snow flakes possible. Now don't get too excited, any snowflakes will be short lived and won't accumulate outside of the Alleghenies.
When:
- Friday 12:00 PM - 11:00 PM
Impact:
- Widespread light to moderate showers
Need to know:
- Rain and showers will make for a wet evening commute
Timeline
Friday 6:00 AM
The morning commute will be cold and blustery but dry. A few flakes will move into far northern Maryland by 9:00 AM and continue to sink south throughout the late morning hours.
Friday 12:00 PM
A few snowflakes are possible as far south as DC! Any flurries that do make it down to the surface will melt on contact as ground temperatures are well above freezing. They will not cause any issues but may catch your attention! There may be some slushy accumulation in far northern Maryland on grassy surfaces were light snow persists a bit longer.
Friday 6:00 PM
Throughout the afternoon any snowflakes will transition over to a gusty and chilly rain and will continue through the evening hours.
Saturday 12:00 AM
The last of the showers will taper off overnight and we'll wake up to more sunshine Saturday morning!
How much rain?
We are still in a major rainfall deficit and will take every drop we can get! Fridays rain won't be super beneficial...but most areas closer to the I-95 corridor will pick up around .25" of rain. The farther west/southwest you are the less rain you can expect.
The updated drought monitor shows an expanded area of severe drought conditions and moderate drought conditions across the DMV.
