WASHINGTON โ On Feb. 29, National Park Service leaders will reveal their prediction for peak bloom, or when we can expect at least 70% of the cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin to be in bloom.
Temperatures aren't the only indicator of when the blooms blossom, but they are a big part of it. Over the past several months, the DMV has had no shortage of above-average temperatures.
December temperatures ended up being 3.8 degrees above average, January was 2.3 degrees warmer than normal, and so far for February, we're already over 4 degrees above average.
So far, this winter is in fifth place for the warmest on record, but with really mild weather on the way next week, our WUSA9 team of meteorologists wouldn't be surprised if we move up in the ranks before the month is over.
"While we won't have the precise window until February 29th, I think it's pretty safe to say we're looking at an earlier than average peak bloom time," Mike Litterest, NPS spokesperson, said.
The average date of peak bloom is April 3 or 4, but since 2018, peak bloom has occurred earlier than average.
