The holiday season is fully underway across the DMV.

WASHINGTON — The holiday season is fully underway, and we want you to be able to celebrate the season without breaking the bank. 

Here's our list of 9+ free and fun events happening around the District this weekend to help you get inspired.

Thursday, Dec. 7:

Happy Hour Me, Please | Poetry Showcase

  • Focus Social Club on H Street in Northeast D.C. is hosting "Happy Hour Me Please: DMV Professionals Mixer & Poetry Showcase" from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m.
  • Mingle and make connections with like-minded people at this mixer.
  • The event is free to attend.

Holiday Trivia at Atlas Brew Works Ivy City

  • Compete alone or with a team in this holiday-themed trivia night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Atlas Brew Works Ivy City Brewery & Taproom. 
  • The winning team receives a $50 Atlas gift card, and 2nd place will receive a six-pack of Atlas beer.
  • The event is free and open to the public.

Friday, Dec. 8:

Comedy on U Street

  • Head to Solly's on U Street for a night filled with laughter.
  • A free comedy show will be held from 8 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.

Lights & Ice: Hanukkah Skate Night

  • The Festival of Lights is back at the Canal Park Ice Rink with free skate rentals for the first 150 attendees. 
  • Guests can expect live music, free Hanukkah-themed donuts, and hot cider from neighborhood confectionary shop Kilwins courtesy of the Capitol Riverfront BID. Plus dreidels, glow sticks, gelt, and an exclusive Capitol Riverfront mug & hot cocoa kit for the first 100 attendees.
  • Registration is not required but recommended.
  • This event is free and open to the public.

Saturday, Dec. 9:


Bird Tour at Hains Point

  • The free bird tour at Hains Point kicks off at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
  • With great views of the Potomac and Washington Channel, officials say Hains Point offers a wonderful habitat for wintering waterfowl, gulls, and numerous raptor species. 
  • Anyone looking to participate is asked to meet in the parking lot at the southern tip of Hains Point.
    • FYI: Public transportation options are limited. The nearest Metro stations (Smithsonian and L'Enfant Plaza) are several miles away.

Thrift the District "Sweater Weather Clothing Swap" at Yoga Heights Georgia Ave.

  • Did someone say new clothes? Head to Yoga Heights Georgia Avenue for the Sweater Weather Clothing Swap from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.
  • Bring your gently used fall/winter clothes, shoes, scarves, hats, and jewelry, and trade them in for something new to you. 
  • Officials say this event is a great and sustainable way to update your wardrobe.
  • Tickets are $10 per person to attend the event.

Chemistry Show-And-Tell for Children 

  • The STEM Show-And-Tell for kids, focused on chemistry, will be held from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Shepherd Park Library (Large meeting room 2) at 7420 Georgia Avenue, Northwest.
  • Anyone with a little one 5 years old and up is encouraged to attend the free event.

Improv for All! Workshop at Studio Theatre

  • Introduce yourself to the world of improv by taking this free, instructor-led class from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Studio Theatre on 14th Street, Northwest.
  • This event will take place in the Milton Theater on the second floor of the Studio Theatre.
  • Tickets are donation-based.

Sunday, Dec. 10:

Gingerbread House Workshop at Metrobar

  • Meet at the bar in Northeast D.C. to decorate your very own gingerbread house in celebration of the holiday season.
  • Registration is $20 per person and includes one gingerbread house kit.
