Traffic backs up in Ocean City after sinkhole appears

The work is expected to be completed sometime overnight in an effort to minimize the impact on the July 4 travel to Ocean City.

OCEAN CITY, Md. — Traffic piled up along the Assawoman Bay Bridge Wednesday night after a sinkhole was discovered near the base of the bridge.

According to the Maryland Department of Transportation, officials became aware of the sinkhole around 7 p.m. Crews were sent to assess the situation and worked to place materials down to cover the hole. The materials include metal plates on the roadway.

The work is expected to be completed sometime overnight in an effort to minimize the impact on the July 4 travel to Ocean City.

Drivers were encouraged to find alternate routes of travel, as around 9 p.m. Ocean City Police transitioned to one-way flagging. While traffic was open on Route 90, there were also significant delays as the alternative traffic flow utilized one lane around the repairs.
