More than a dozen metal filled barrels spill onto I-495 after fiery tractor trailer crash

Fire officials say it appears the collision was a result of a hit and run crash.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — A fiery crash involving a tractor-trailer on the Beltway caused major traffic delays Sunday morning. 

According to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue officials, the crash happened on the Outer Loop in Montgomery County between Old Georgetown Road and River Road. 

It appears the crash was a result of a hit and run crash where an unknown car hit the tractor trailer, then left the scene. according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesperson Pete Piringer. 

The crash caused the tractor-trailer to catch fire and caused more than a dozen drums filled with crushed tungsten metal to spill onto Interstate 495. Hazmat crews were on scene. 

Traffic is was diverted past the crash onto old Georgetown Road. 

The road has since reopened to traffic
