One person dead after fiery crash in Brandywine, Md.

Police say a car rammed into the back end of a tractor-trailer, causing it to catch on fire.

BRANDYWINE, Md. — A car caught on fire after it slammed into the rear of a tractor-trailer in Brandywine, Maryland Thursday night.

Maryland State Police are trying to determine what caused the vehicle to slam into the back end of the tractor-trailer causing a fiery fatal crash.

According to a release from MSP, both vehicles were travelling north on Rt. 301 north of Cedarville Road shortly before 11 p.m. when the car crashed into the rear end of the tractor-trailer, causing the car to burst into flames.  

Troopers were called to the scene where they found fire and EMS personnel extinguishing the flames at the crash site.  Medics on scene told the responding Troopers one person was dead inside the wreckage of the car, police said.

Northbound Rt. 301 remained closed for several hours overnight while MSP investigated the crash, officials said.  

A WUSA9 photographer confirms the scene cleared before 4:30 a.m.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
