WASHINGTON — Metro officials say they are committed to regular checks of brake bolts following a Blue line train derailment near National Airport last month.
During Thursday's board meeting, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority said brake bolts will be inspected every 50 days to make sure they are properly tightened. This comes after inspections following the Sept. 29 derailment showed problems in about 6% of brakes in Metro's older cars.
Following last months derailment, WMATA determined it was caused by an object on the track. It was later identified as a piece of the brakes from a 3000-series train. Metro released footage from the derailment that shows the object on the tracks.
No one was hurt as a result of the derailment, but about 50 passengers were on board at the time.
