SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. — For the first time ever, Virginia Railway Express will add weekend service.
The VRE is planning to add four trains on Saturdays between Spotsylvania and D.C., according to the Fredericksburg Advance.
There will be two northbound trains in the morning — and two heading back in the afternoon.
VRE says the new service is being held up by contract negotiations with CSX and Norfolk Southern. CSX owns the tracks in Fredericksburg and Norfolk Southern owns the tracks in Manassas.
On the VRE website, the company said it expected weekend service to begin in July, but now the company says new weekend service is expected to start within the next ten months.
The VRE announced plans for weekend service back in April as a part of its 2050 Service Vision. They announced they would be starting with service from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays.
Eventually, they plan to add Sunday service as well, running from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
