ROUND HILL, Va. — A driver is in the hospital after he drove the wrong way on Harry Byrd Highway in Loudoun County, causing a three-vehicle crash.

Loudoun County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to the area of Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) and Stoneleigh Drive  in Round Hill, Virginia, for a report of a wrong-way collision. When officers arrived two cars and a pick-up truck involved in the crash.

According to a preliminary investigation by the sheriff's office, the driver of a sedan was trying to turn on to Harry Byrd Highway and ended up entering the highway going the wrong way. Deputy Sam Shenouda, a public information officer for the sheriff's office, said the sedan first ran head-on into a pick-up truck with five people inside, including two kids. The impact of the initial crash spun the sedan around and caused a second head-on crash with a third vehicle, Shenouda said.

The driver of the sedan was the only person in the car. The driver of the third car was the only person in that car. The drivers of the pick-up truck and the third car were taken to the hospital for evaluation, but were not seriously hurt, according to the sheriff's office.

The driver of the sedan that cause the crash was hospitalized with serious injuries, but Shenouda said those injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Investigators are still working to determine what caused the sedan's driver to drive the wrong way. None of the people involved have been identified by police.
