1 dead in crash on I-95 in Howard County

The cause of the crash is still under investigation

HOWARD COUNTY, Md. — A man is dead following a crash on Interstate 95 near Jessup, Maryland Thursday morning. Traffic investigators are still trying to determine a cause.

Maryland State Police troopers responded to I-95 Southbound past MD-175 (Exit 41) just before 4:30 a.m. Officer arrived to find a crash involving five vehicles.

MSP said a man died at the crash scene. He has been identified as 37-year-old Sifrido Villalobos of Silver Spring. Another person was taken to the hospital for treatment. The severity of their injuries is not yet known. No other injuries were reported.

Investigators believe a Nissan heading southbound hit a Mercedes and caused a chain reaction crash.

Three left lanes were blocked Thursday morning for the crash investigation. Traffic is getting by the scene using the right lane, but delays are building beginning at MD-100.

To avoid getting stuck in a slowdown, WUSA9's traffic specialist Lindsey Nance suggests using Route 1 or Baltimore-Washington Parkway to get around the crash.

Authorities say an extended closure is expected, and there is no word yet as to when lanes will reopen to traffic.
