Lanes back open after deadly crash on I-66 in Fairfax County

A 23-year-old driver from Virginia died at the scene.

DUNN LORING, Va. — A serious crash has closed all westbound lanes of Interstate 66 in Fairfax County Friday morning. The fiery crash slowed traffic for several hours, but general purpose lanes were back open to traffic by Friday afternoon. 

According to Virginia Department of Transportation officials, the crash happened on westbound I-66 before I-495. VDOT says all general purpose and express lanes were blocked for several hours. Just after 11 a.m., VDOT announced general purpose lanes were back open to traffic.

Traffic is being diverted onto I-495 and delays begin at the Leesburg Pike exit (at VA-7). Drivers are urged to use alternate routes, according to traffic officials.

Virginia State Police troopers were initially called to a crash involving two vehicles that occurred in the Express Lanes at the interchange with I-495 just before 8 a.m.

According to investigators, a construction vehicle heading westbound in the left general purpose lane on I-66 when it crossed into the the highway's Express Lanes. 

The truck struck a guardrail and Jersey wall, then flipped on its side and caught fire. The driver, 23-year-old Devin G. Stewart of Fredericksburg died at the scene, police said. 

The crash remains under investigation.
