FALLS CHURCH, Va. — Two crashes involving multiple vehicles shut down Interstate 495 at Interstate 66 in Fairfax County early Wednesday morning. All general purpose lanes opened to traffic by 7 a.m., but delays remain beginning at the Springfield Interchange, according to traffic officials.
Emergency crews first responded to the crashes on the Beltway inner loop at Exit 49 in the area of Falls Church around 6 a.m. First responders blocked all lanes in the area to conduct investigations. A spokesperson for Virginia State Police tells WUSA9 troopers responded to two separate two-vehicle crashes in the same area of the Capital Beltway. No injuries were reported, according to the spokesperson, but there were three disabled vehicles in the area that crews worked to clear from the road.
As of 7 a.m., the right lane and shoulder of the I-66 ramp, and one left Express lane remains blocked. All other lanes are back open. Those in the area should follow police direction. Some delays remain.
The cause of both crashes remain under investigation.
