Hillandale bus stop destroyed after car crashes into it

Car crashed into a bus stop in Hillandale.

HILLANDALE, Md. — All lanes are blocked on southbound New Hampshire Avenue after a car crashed into a bus stop after colliding with another car in Hillandale Wednesday morning.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue responded to a crash on New Hampshire Avenue and Chalmers Road around 7:30 a.m. Fire officials say the multiple people were injured and at least one person was trapped in one of the cars. The severity of the injuries, and the exact number of people hurt is not yet known. 

The car that crashed into the bus stop completely swiped the legs out from under the bus shelter, which has fallen on the car and a fence behind it, photos shared by the fire department show. The bench under the shelter has also completely collapsed. The bus stop sign is also under the shelter and as been bent from where it usually stands. There is a lot of shattered glass on the ground from the bus shelter.

Officials say to expect significant delays and seek alternate routes. They have not provided any estimate on how long it will be until the lanes reopen.
