BROOKEVILLE, Md. — A Maryland community has been left shaken after the death of a high school senior in a car crash Wednesday.
Sanaa Vil, 17, was driving to school Wednesday morning with two teenage passengers when she lost control of the car, according to police, and collided with a wooden telephone poll near Norwood Road and Ashton Forest Way in Sandy Spring. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and the two other teens had to be removed from the vehicle.
On Thursday evening, over a dozen of Sanaa Vil's friends gathered outside her home, to honor her memory and console her family. She was described by the mourners as beautiful and bright.
“Sanaa was an angel to me," her twin brother, Joshua Vil, said. "We did everything together. Play sports, activities, go to church."
Sanaa Vil's father tearfully recalled his last moments with his daughter as she walked out the door and headed to school
"Before the accident, I was the last one to kiss her and say goodbye before I left," the teen's father said. "She said she had two people to pick up. I said it's raining, but she still went to go pick up the other two students anyway, to go to school."
Sanaa Vil played varsity basketball at Sherwood High School and was an active member of the Black Student Union and school band. She was loved by all her friends. She leaves behind three siblings and two loving parents.
“Sanaa was someone really special," said a friend named Candace. "I was going through a tough time and she was always there for me. I’m going to miss her so much."
The two other teens in the crash are expected to recover.
Montgomery County police is still investigating what exactly happened in the moments leading up to the crash.
The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses.
