Lanes back open after Beltway crash slows morning commute in Prince George's County

A crash involving a box truck impacted travel on the inner loop Tuesday morning

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — A crash involving a box truck led to standstill traffic on the inner loop of the Capital Beltway early Tuesday morning. The overnight incident briefly blocked all southbound lanes of I-95/I-495 starting at MD-4.

Traffic officials say the box truck struck an overhead sign. No injuries were reported, and only the truck was involved in the collision. Investigators are still working to learn what led up to the crash.

By 7 a.m., two travel lanes were still blocked. One shoulder and one right deceleration lane were also closed while crews work to clear the scene and repair the damaged sign. The crash resulted in standstill traffic for several hours.

All lanes were reopened to traffic by 8 a.m.

Another crash on the Beltway also snarled morning traffic in McLean. Traffic authorities say a multi-vehicle crash closed southbound outer loop lanes at the George Washington Parkway in Fairfax County Tuesday morning. By 6:45 a.m., authorities said the scene of that crash had cleared, but delays remained.

Details about the crash, and what led up to it, are still under investigation. Police say there was at least one injury as a result of this crash, but did not provide details about how many vehicles were involved, or the severity of those injuries.

As we learn more about both crashes, we will update this story.
