LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. — Strong thunderstorms from over the weekend left 25 people displaced in Loudoun County.
On Saturday, a family in Loudoun County was hosting relatives when lightning suddenly hit the home causing a fire. Crews from multiple fire departments were dispatched to Shannondale Road just before 5 p.m. When they arrived smoke and fire were shooting from the garage and had extended up to second-story.
Due to the house's rural location, access to fire hydrants was limited, and delayed responding units because they had to use tankers to shuttle water to the house to extinguish the fire. Firefighters used hose lines to extinguish a bulk of the exterior fire before entering the home.
Everyone in the home was evacuated upon the rescue team's arrival. Firefighters were also able to safely remove the family pets including 3 dogs and a lizard.
The total estimated damage from the fire was $836,000.
