Former Capitals player Chris Simon dead at 52

Simon, who played 15 seasons in the NHL, died Monday.

WASHINGTON — Chris Simon has died at the age of 52. The seasoned NHL player's career included a time with the Washington Capitals when they reached the first Stanley Cup Final in franchise history in 1998.

The Capitals took to their X account, formally known as Twitter, on Tuesday to share the tragic news. 

"The Washington Capitals are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Chris Simon. Chris was a fixture in Washington for parts of seven seasons and was an integral member of the 1998 team that reached the first Stanley Cup Final in franchise history. Our entire organization extends our deepest condolences to his family and friends."

Selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the second round of the 1990 NHL Draft, Simon played 782 regular-season games for the Quebec Nordiques, Colorado Avalanche, Washington Capitals, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers, Calgary Flames, New York Islanders and Minnesota Wild, and had 305 points (144 goals, 161 assists), according to the NHL. 

“The National Hockey League mourns the passing of Chris Simon, who played in more than 800 NHL games over 15 seasons. A fierce competitor and teammate, Simon won the Stanley Cup with Colorado in 1996 and reached the 1998 Stanley Cup Final with Washington as well as the 2004 Stanley Cup Final with Calgary," a statement from the NHL reads. "Our sincere condolences go out to his family, friends and former teammates.”

The cause of his death was not mentioned.
