WASHINGTON — The Commanders are making plenty of roster moves ahead of the first NFL regular season game against Tampa Bay. On Thursday, the Commanders announced a big name would no longer be part of the team.
The team traded wide receiver Jahan Dotson to the Philadelphia Eagles. The terms of the deal give the Commanders a third-round pick and two seventh-round picks in the 2025 NFL Draft.
"[Jahan] is gonna have a great opportunity up in Philly...wishing him the best of luck," said running back Austin Ekeler.
The Commanders selected Dotson No. 16 overall in the 2022 draft. He made 84 catches for 1,041 yards with 11 touchdowns over two seasons with the team.
"We all gonna text him after practice and wish him the best, and you know, he's one of our brothers, so of course he's on our mind," explained fellow wide receiver Martavis Bryant.
News of the trade comes just a few hours after the Commanders announced they were parting ways with kicker Riley Patterson.
The Commanders have one more preseason game on Sunday against the New England Patriots at Commanders Field.
Immediately after the game against New England, the roster has to be cut down from 90 players to 53. Head coach Dan Quinn says it’s not his favorite time.
“[It's] the toughest part of the job because so many people are going for it, at the highest level," the coach said. "But the conversation about the roster is always ongoing with [General Manager] Adam [Peters] and I, and how do we find the group together.”
