Commanders final preseason game will be some players final chance to show Coach Quinn they belong

The 2024 second overall draft pick, Jayden Daniels, was officially named the Commanders starting quarterback.

ASHBURN, Va. — Five quarterbacks took the practice field for the Commanders Wednesday, after rookie Sam Hartman returned from injury. The team also signed Ashburn native Trace McSorley last week.

While Coach Dan Quinn made Jayden Quinn his official starter, the Commanders haven't said who will be under center Sunday night for the preseason finale against the Patriots or how much playing time each quarterback will get.

On the practice field Wednesday, reps are coming at a premium.

WUSA9 asked some of Daniels’ potential backups about getting work on the practice field with such a full quarterback room.

"That’s not really us, as players, to worry about," said quarterback Jeff Driskel. "It’s a good group of guys, which makes it a lot easier, but yeah that’s not something we really think about."

"They’re doing their best to get as many people reps, but really taking advantage when you’re not in there getting game reps, getting the mental reps and going through your own process behind the play and I think everyone in the room does a really good job," added Trace McSorley. "They understand the nature of the business. There’s only so many reps to go around and like you said, there’s five guys in yellow jerseys out there today."

McSorley joined the team during joint practices in Miami last week after not being at an NFL Training Camp.

The Ashburn native says he's happy to be back in the DMV, practicing with the Commanders only about 10 minutes away from where he played high school football.

"Instead of staying at a team hotel, I'm living in my mom's basement," McSorley said. "So she's happy with that, having me back."
