ASHBURN, Va. — Washington Commanders OTAs continue in Ashburn. As the Commanders' new quarterback Jayden Daniels works to get comfortable in the NFL, Luke McCaffrey, a rookie receiver, is offering a helping hand.
The McCaffrey name has a long history in the NFL. Luke's dad, Ed, played wide receiver for 13 years in the NFL, winning three Super Bowls. His brother Christian is a star running back for the San Francisco 49ers.
Luke was picked in the third round of the NFL Draft by the Commanders. He played college ball for the Rice Owls. He played quarterback for Nebraska and Rice before moving to wide receiver his last two seasons. During his last season at Rice, he led the team with 58 catches and six touchdowns.
But his time as quarterback is helping him develop his relationship with Daniels.
"It's a position that's hard to understand unless you've played it. The biggest thing I've noticed is the communication aspect. You speak the same language, you understand that. Going into rookie minicamp you try to get a head start on. It's a brand new language, it's a brand new system," he said.
Luke told WUSA9 he hopes to build the relationship as the new season progresses.
