ASHBURN, Va. — Commanders head coach Dan Quinn has accomplished what he calls the "toughest part" of his job: finalizing his 53-man roster.
Quinn and the Commanders management had until 4:30 p.m. Tuesday to decide who would be wearing the burgundy and gold for the 2024-2025 season. The list put out by the team Tuesday saw 34 players released, three placed on the injured reserve list, and one name placed on the physically unable to perform list.
Some early fan favorites were not on the list, including social media sensation Sam Hartman and wide receiver Martavis Bryant, a former Pittsburg Steeler who was attempting a comeback after not playing in an NFL game since 2018 because of a five-year ban for violating the league's substance abuse policy; Bryant added a touchdown to his stats in this final preseason game against the Patriots.
The releases of defensive end K.J. Henry, center Ricky Stromberg, and tight end Cole Turner -- along with the recent trade of Jahan Dotson to the Eagles -- continue to show new General Manager Adam Peters did not think very highly of many of the top draft picks made during the Ron Rivera era. Every one of Peters' draft picks from 2024 is staying with the team. Stromberg was a third-round pick in 2023, Henry was a fifth-round pick in 2023 and Turner was a fifth-round pick in 2022.
Now, the Commanders turn their attention to players from other teams who were waived or released. The team remains very thin at wide receiver, defensive back and offensive line. The Commanders are number two in the waiver wire order, which means they will have plenty of options about who to add to the roster.
