LEESBURG, Va. — The race in Virginia’s 10th District brought out the most candidates in Tuesday's primary election, with 12 Democrats and four Republicans vying to replace Jennifer Wexton.
Outside Stone Bridge High Schoo Tuesday night, campaign workers courted last-minute voters and offering some last second advice on the crowded field.
“Good,” a Democrat voter said. “The more the merrier.”
“It was overwhelming,” another said. “It was like, ‘There’s another one! Oh my gosh! There’s another one!’”
“On the Democrat [side] it looks like they are just throwing anything against the wall and seeing what sticks," a third voter replied.
Just as diverse as the candidate field, were the reasons voters rushed to the polls. For Democrat voters, health care and reproductive rights were top of mind.
“Primarily it’s abortion, that’s one of the big issues,” voter Lindsay Hendrix said.
Justen Richards agreed, adding "women’s bodily autonomy and trans rights" to the list of voting priorities,
Republican voters, however, felt a different pull to the polls.
“Certainly, upset about the way our economy is going,” voter Peter Mielke said. “We are building a house and in the last three years all the materials have gone up 300-500%.”
Another Virginia voter said taxes and immigration issues brought them to the polls.
“Taxes and immigration," one voter said to why they were voting.
Several voters told WUSA9 they were walking in with their minds made up.
“I’m actually following Jennifer Wexton’s lead, so I’ll be voting for Suhas,” Hendrix said.
“On the Republican side we have good candidates,” Mielke added.
But some other voters were still juggling the full field as they walked to the booth.
“Do I know who I am going to pick? No, not really,” one voter said. “I have an idea, but I’m still not sure.
The packed race to represent Virginia's 10th Congressional District will now be between Suhas Subramanyam (D) and Mike W. Clancy (R) in November's general election.
