VIRGINIA, USA — Virginia voters headed to the polls Tuesday for a second time in the primary election season. This after making their voices heard regarding the presidential race back in March. This go around voters were choosing nominees for the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House and several local races, in Arlington County and the cities of Alexandria, Manassas and Winchester.
There were five Republican candidates hoping to be picked to challenge Sen. Tim Kaine in November; Kaine ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination. He has served in the U.S. Senate since 2013. Hung Cao emerged the decisive Republican winner, with more than 60% of the votes.
Six U.S. Congressional districts had contested primary races on Tuesday. Two of the most watched Democratic competitions were in Districts 7 and 10. The incumbents in these offices are not seeking re-election. Abigail Spanberger (D-7), first elected to the U.S. House in 2018, announced she is stepping down from Congress so she can run for governor in 2025. Jennifer Wexton (D-10) is retiring due to health challenges. Wexton was also elected to Congress in 2018.
Both races had crowded candidate fields with seven Democrats and six Republicans vying for the 7th District seat, and 12 Democrats and four Republicans fighting to represent the 10th District. Eugene S. Vindman (D) and Derrick M. Anderson (R) will face off in November to replace Spanberger while Suhas Subramanyam (D) and Mike Clancy (R) duke it out to replace Wexton.
On the Republican front, people are still waiting to see who will take the 5th Congressional primary race. The numbers are still too close to call. Bob Good (R), the incumbent, who has served in Congress since 2020, is being challenged by Virginia State Senator John McGuire. Many see this race as a referendum on former President Donald Trump's political reach. He has endorsed McGuire. This after Good first endorsed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for president, before backing Donald Trump after DeSantis dropped out.
On the local level, the Arlington County Board race focused on housing density, empty office real estate space and sluggish tax revenue. Five candidates competed for the open seat. It's currently held by Board Chair Libby Garvey, who announced she is not seeking re-election. This race is being decided using ranked choice voting, which means instead of selecting just one candidate, voters can rank candidates from first to last according to their preference. The final counting of ballots won't happen until June 22.
Alexandria voters also went to the polls to nominate candidates for Alexandria Mayor and the City Council. Alyia Gaskins got the democratic nod from voters. She was endorsed by current Mayor Justin Wilson, who is not seeking re-election.
Meanwhile over in Manassas City, voters had five candidates to choose from for three primary winners,
