VIRGINIA, USA — Northern Virginia counties and cities reported voter turnout numbers hours ahead of polls closing on Election Day.
The tallies in federal and local races can not be reported in Virginia until polls close at 7 p.m. However, election officials in Fairfax County, Loudoun County and Alexandria City gave information Tuesday afternoon about voter turnout how many people were lining up on Election Day, as well as voters who cast their ballots before Tuesday.
In Fairfax County, Va. turnout was at 67.9% as of 3:30 p.m. on Election Day. With 24.9% showing up during the early hours on Election Day. While, 32% voted early in-person and 11% of the electorate voted absentee, by mail.
Loudoun County, Va. reported at 4 p.m. Tuesday that turnout was at 65.3%, including early ballots. The Election Day turnout was a reported 27.2%
The city of Alexandria, Va. said at 4 p.m. a majority of the votes so far have been by-mail absentee, coming in at 73.4%. Alexandria reported 25.1% of votes were cast on Election Day.
In 2020, 75.1% of eligible Virginia voters turned out to vote, the highest percentage since 1992.
Virginia had the 11th highest turnout in the United States in 2020 and the Commonwealth had a higher percentage than the United States as a whole - 66.6% of eligible American voters turned in that election. Minnesota had the highest voter turnout in 2020 with 79.2% of voters casting ballots in that election.
