WASHINGTON — Vice President Kamala Harris will win Virginia's electoral votes for President of the United States, the Associated Press projected Tuesday evening.
The AP called the tight race just before midnight with approximately 84% of all votes in the commonwealth tallied. As of that point, Harris had won just over 2 million votes, which amounts to approximately 51.5% of all the votes for president in Virginia. Former President Donald Trump was projected to lose Virginia with approximately 47% of the vote.
Trump lost Virginia in the previous two elections, with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton winning with a plurality of 49.73% in 2016 and President Joe Biden taking 54.11% of the vote in 2020.
Harris' projected victory was buoyed by a strong showing of support by Democrats in Northern Virginia, where, as of late Tuesday evening, she had received an estimated 66% of the vote Virginia's most populous county, Fairfax County. Harris also put up strong showings in Richmond, where she was projected to take more than 81% of the vote, and Norfolk County, where as of Tuesday evening the AP projected she had received 71% of the vote.
Trump dominated the commonwealth's western counties and was also projected to beat Harris in Hanover County and Virginia Beach.
Also Tuesday evening, the AP projected Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine would win re-election for a third term over his Republican opponent Hung Cao. Kaine was Clinton's running mate when she won Virginia but ultimately lost the presidential election in 2016.
